# Original and Copy

> How 2hour.fun labels the first coin and the copies that follow it.

Every coin is checked against the earlier coins on 2hour.fun that count: any coin launched **in the 7 days before it**, and any older coin that's **still trading**. If none of them used the same ticker, the same name or the same picture, it gets the **Original** badge. A coin that did is labelled **Copy**, so you can see at a glance which came first.

## What counts as a copy

A coin is a Copy if, compared with an earlier coin that counts, it has any of these:

| Check | Counts as the same | Doesn't count |
| - | - | - |
| **Ticker** | The same ticker, ignoring "\$", spaces and capitals | A different ticker |
| **Name** | The same name; a one-letter change on names of 5 or more letters; or the name with a copycat add-on such as "Real", "Official", "OG", "CTO", "Baby", "New", "V2" or "2.0" | A different name, or a similar idea |
| **Picture** | Essentially the same picture: a re-upload, re-save or resize | A different picture, even of a similar thing |

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Examples:** if "Sly Fox" (\$SLY) launched on Monday, then "Real Sly Fox", "Sly Foxx" or another coin called \$SLY launched that week would be labelled Copy. "Sly Wolf" with its own picture would not.

## Older coins

An older coin still counts while it's trading: it has graduated, or it traded in the 7 days before the new coin launched. A community coin that's been building for months keeps its name, and a coin that copies it is labelled Copy, however long ago the original launched.

When an older coin is more than a week old and has stopped trading, its ticker and name are free to use again, and a coin using them can be Original.

When you search Explore, each original is listed before the coins that copied it.

## Why it works this way

Similar ideas aren't copies. Lots of coins share a theme, and that's fine. The label is there for the low-effort kind: the same ticker, the same name or the same picture, launched straight after someone else's coin. Together with the [launch window](https://docs.2hour.fun/the-window.md) and the \$500 launch fee, it makes copying someone else's coin far less rewarding.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The label is information, not a verdict. An Original coin isn't automatically a good one, and checking the [safety badges](https://docs.2hour.fun/safety-badges.md) is always worth it.
